Very Long Answer Questions with Answers (GNM)

1. Describe the heart with structure, conduction system, cardiac cycle and functions

Answer:
The heart is a hollow muscular organ situated in the mediastinum between the lungs. It acts as a pump to circulate blood throughout the body.

Structure of Heart

  • Four chambers: Right atrium, Right ventricle, Left atrium, Left ventricle

  • Valves: Tricuspid, Mitral (bicuspid), Pulmonary, Aortic

  • Layers: Endocardium, Myocardium, Epicardium

  • Covered by pericardium

Conduction System of Heart

This system initiates and conducts impulses for rhythmic contraction.

Cardiac Cycle

One complete heartbeat (about 0.8 seconds).

Phases:

  1. Atrial systole

  2. Ventricular systole

  3. Complete diastole

Functions of Heart

  • Pumps oxygenated blood to body

  • Pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs

  • Maintains circulation

  • Helps regulate blood pressure

2. Describe blood vessels with types, structure and functions

Answer:
Blood vessels are tubes that carry blood throughout the body.

Types of Blood Vessels

  1. Arteries – carry blood away from heart

  2. Veins – carry blood towards heart

  3. Capillaries – exchange of gases and nutrients

Structure

  • Arteries: Thick muscular walls

  • Veins: Thin walls with valves

  • Capillaries: Single cell layer

Functions

  • Transport blood

  • Maintain blood pressure

  • Exchange of materials at tissue level

3. Explain circulation of blood

Answer:
Circulation of blood refers to continuous movement of blood through heart and blood vessels.

Types of Circulation

  1. Pulmonary Circulation
    Heart → Lungs → Heart

  2. Systemic Circulation
    Heart → Body → Heart

  3. Coronary Circulation
    Supplies blood to heart muscle

  4. Portal Circulation
Carries blood from digestive organs to liver

Functions

  • Transport oxygen and nutrients

Normal adult BP: 120/80 mmHg

  • Systolic pressure – during ventricular contraction

  • Diastolic pressure – during ventricular relaxation

Instrument used: Sphygmomanometer

Pulse

Pulse is rhythmic expansion of arteries due to heart contraction.

Normal adult pulse: 72/min

Common site: Radial artery

Factors Affecting BP and Pulse

  • Age

  • Exercise

  • Emotion
